The Club ran its annual Youth Technology competition – on Tuesday 15th November at the excellent facilities at Birchwood High School.
Teams in three age groups were entered by Birchwood High School, Bishop’s Stortford College, Herts & Essex High School, Hockerill Anglo-European College, Leventhorpe School, St Mary’s Catholic School and The Bishop’s Stortford High School.
The task, that had to be completed in 2 hours, was to design and construct a ‘coin sorter’ to sort and collect a combination of 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p coins into separate coin collectors from the materials provided. These included 4 x 500mm lengths of 10mmx10mm square wood, 2 x 500mm lengths of 4mm dowel, 2 x A4 card 1.5mm thick, 4 x A4 card (230gm), 7 screws 3.5 x 16mm, 10 regular drawing pins and a 300mm x 300mm plywood base!
The models were judged by chief judge Colin Butler, Richard Roscoe and Duncan Forbes, all of whom have great experience in engineering.
The senior section was won by the team from Bishops Stortford College (Toby Pryce, Fenton Connolly, Jonathan Miller, Peter Finch).
The intermediate competition was won by The Bishops Stortford High School (George Welland, Harry James, Jonathan Pakala, Sam Shemwell).
The youngest age group was won by the team from Leventhorpe School (Holly Panter , Odin Baker, Elin Mills , Oscar Vickers).
President Jane Mitchell presented the winning teams with their prizes and thanked all concerned (Birchwood High School, staff, judges and most importantly the students).
