Jim Stewart has been involved with Talking Newspapers since 1983 and has been the Chairman of Hamilton Sound since that time.
He has been a member of the board of the Association of Scottish Talking Newspapers (ASTN) since 2008 and has provided technical support to TNs throughout Scotland on behalf of ASTN during that time in his official role as Technical Advisor.
As a professional engineer, during his working career, Jim specialised in the application of computers to ‘mission critical’ and ‘safety critical’ control systems in the Steel, Aviation and Electricity Generation and Distribution industries and has worked for or has been consultant to British Steel, Civil Aviation Authority, National Air Traffic Services (NATS), Scottish Hydro Electric, Scottish Power, National Grid, Western Power (Australia), General Electric (USA).
During his time with National Air Traffic Services (1988 – 1996), he was System Manager for the Oceanic Air Traffic Control System and was latterly Deputy Director at the Scottish and Oceanic Air Traffic Control Centre, Prestwick. He also served on the automation committee of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) which forms part of the United Nations Organisation.
He formed his own IT Consultancy Company (James B Stewart Ltd) in 1997.
Publications include: Guidelines for the Documentation of Software in Industrial Computer Systems - The Institution of Electrical Engineers - 1985. Revision of the above document, re-published in 1990. Design for Testability - The Institution of Electrical Engineers - 1989
Since retirement in 2006 Jim has applied his software engineering skills to the design and deployment of computer applications to assist with the many and varied tasks involved in producing and distributing Talking Newspapers and is happy for all TNs to make free use of these applications.
These include software to automatically assemble disparate audio tracks into a finished publication ready for duplication or transmission, duplication software and web creation and management software tools.
