Thu 8th October 2015 at 18.30 - 20.00 Big Noise Govanhill
Ayrshire-born Lorna Geller is a Senior Musician at Big Noise Govanhill, which was launched in the summer of 2013, and already works with over 700 children from babies to Primary 4.
Big Noise is an orchestra programme that aims to use music making to foster confidence, teamwork, pride and aspiration in the children taking part – and across the wider community. It is based on the methods of Venezuela’s “El Sistema” movement and is run by the charity Sistema Scotland.
First findings from a long term study of Raploch and Govanhill led by the Glasgow Centre for Population Health show convincing evidence of positive change to children’s lives. Researchers conclude the programme represents a good investment for society, with the potential to significantly enhance participants’ lives, prospects, health and wellbeing.
Lorna will talk about the Big Noise Centre in Govanhill, and also the wider aims and impact of Sistema Scotland’s Big Noise centres.
