Press release, 8th Dec 2017
Following a recent selection process involving senior pupils from Bearsden Academy and Douglas Academy, 6th year pupil Isla Martin has been chosen to take part in Rotary’s 2018 Euroscola project.
Sponsored by Allander Rotary, Isla will be part of a group of 26 young people from Scotland joining others from across the EU in Strasbourg to prepare and deliver a debate in the European Parliament.
Douglas Academy Headteacher Barry Smedley said ‘Everyone in the Douglas Academy School Community is absolutely delighted Isla will be involved in Euroscola 2018 at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. This will be an an amazing opportunity for Isla to further develop her language skills by working collaboratively with fellow students from the other EU Member States. We are very proud of her achievements and certain she will fully embrace all of the challenges that this once in a lifetime experience will bring. ‘
Rotary President Iain Sim commented on the very high calibre of those who had applied to take part, and said ‘Our selection panel had a challenging job, as each young person was outstanding. We’re sure that Isla will not only get a huge amount from the experience, but she will contribute a great deal too.’
Talking about the forthcoming trip, Isla said ‘I’m absolutely delighted to have been chosen to participate in Euroscola next year. I am really looking forward to gaining a global perspective on matters which affect all of us and working with young people from all across Europe.’
Following her experience Isla attended Allander Rotary as guest speaker to tell the Club about her experience.
