Cleethorpes Rotary Club 60th Charter

Cleethorpes Rotary Club 60th Charter

The President and Rotarians of Cleethorpes Rotary Club, were delighted so many of our friends, families and fellow Rotarians chose to join us on Sunday, to celebrate our 60th Charter with us. The President, said she was honoured to be the 60th President and host of such a happy occasion.

Cleethorpes Rotary was founded and set up in 1965, with the Inaugural meeting taking place on the 9th November 1965 followed by their first Charter granted to them on 28th April 1966. 3 of these founders were Chief Supt, Arthur Eric Darnell, local Bank Manager Reginald Hines and local GP Dr. John Burns.

It was particularly special that we had the daughter and son in law of Arthur, amongst us on Sunday afternoon, in our very own Glenice Robinson, (45 years in Cleethorpes Inner Wheel) and her husband Richard Robinson, (48 years in Cleethorpes Rotary). What a joyful reminder of Arthur’s family legacy.

Rotary is a global charitable organisation and over the years, Cleethorpes and the Rotary Charity has evolved alongside the world at large. Membership has opened up, diversified, and become far more reflective of the communities it serves. And that evolution hasn’t diluted Rotary—it’s strengthened it. Our flag exchange scheme was evident of the global network of people who share the same values, wherever they are in the world.

If you ask most Rotarians what keeps them coming back, week after week, year after year, I believe they would say, it’s the fellowship and friendship. The shared sense of purpose, the familiar faces, the feeling of belonging and support of each other.

Because Rotary isn’t just something you do. It gets under your skin and becomes something you are a part of. That, I think, is the real secret of these 60 years. Not just what’s been achieved—but how it’s been achieved. Together. But if the past 60 years have taught us anything, it’s this: As long as there are people willing to come together in the spirit of service, fellowship and friendship, Rotary will continue to thrive.

We celebrate everyone who has been part of this journey, however long they have been a member. Everyone’s contribution is valuable, whatever they are able to do.
