Students from QEGS and UCC competed in the annual Rotary Technology Tournament on Friday 16thMarch at Kendal Leisure Centre. This year’s engineering challenge was based on Elon Musk’s Space X Company that launches rockets into space. Teams from secondary schools throughout Cumbria competed to design and build a launch system that could propel a payload under the power of electric bands, whilst meeting various criteria on the way. Prototypes had to be accompanied by a portfolio of designs to explain to the judges how and why decisions were made throughout the design development stage. Finally, schools had to build and demonstrate the effectiveness of their launcher in a live firing test.
UCC students had two groups representing KS3and KS4; the KS3 team in particular caught the attention of teachers, engineers and judges alike by their approach to their designing. Indeed, such was their superb teamwork, innovative thinking, detailed professional design folio, and novel design that Ullswater KS3 team were announced Foundation Winners. QEGS competing in the intermediate and advanced categories were placed second overall in the advanced category.
Students and school staff gave Rotary a huge vote of thanks for organising such an exciting, enjoyable and challenging event.
