Angela Gannon from Historic Scotland delivered a very interesting talk to our members about the extensive archaeological industrial survey she and her team undertook of the historic industrial works in and around Muirkirk in South East Ayrshire.
From a rural farming community the area was transformed towards the late 18th century into a vibrant coal and iron oar mining and iron production community with accompanying rapid population growth. This period of industrial expansion was however short lived as the iron ore supplies ran out. The area and other similar towns and villages in the area still struggle to cope with the cessasion of their industrial past and related job losses but some aesthetic improvements are in evidence and the strong community bonds remain.
