SUPPORTING THE INTERNATIONAL CHILDRENS TRUST (ICT)

Rotary sponsors the education of two young people through ICT, the International Children's Trust. The children we sponsor are Niroshan Krishantha, who is in Sri Lankan, and Chinnarasu from the Boys Town at Gummidipoondi in India.

ICT supports programmes of work that help children to build their self-esteem, gain access to their rights, and to develop the skills needed to break out of poverty and create a better future for themselves. Home-sponsorship subsidises the poorest families, mainly single-parent families, to help them keep their children in school during the critical 10-17 years of age, when many youngsters start to drop out of school to augment the family budget. The scheme helps the children successfully complete their secondary education (with a success rate of 85%) and in some cases go on to higher education. 

The Gummidipoondi  ICT provides educational support for boys from extremely poor and vulnerable backgrounds.  Gummidipoondi is for children from remote rural villages. Children come from severely economically deprived backgrounds and, often, broken homes. Without the Centres, these children would have little hope of a fulfilling childhood or the chance to reach their potential. The Centres change children's lives by giving them the kind of integrated support they need to break out of poverty.  Sponsored children are educated, clothed and fed a nutritious diet as a basic platform for development.  Released from the daily pressures of survival, they are able to explore their talents and discover their potential in a supportive, encouraging environment. 

The Gummidipoondi Centre was founded in 1988. It is in a rural area where many farmers have small acreage and eke a living from their land. The children of such families rarely attend regular school or drop out early to work with their families in the fields.
