Arthur Hill's 50 Years in Rotary

Tue, Sep 25th 2012 at 12:00 am - 12:00 am

Arthur Hill joined the Rotary Club of Lostwithiel in 1981 after being a member of the Rotary Club of Buxton for nearly 20 years. Now, some 30 years later, Arthur has clocked up over 50 years in Rotary.

When Arthur Hill joined the Rotary Club of Lostwithiel in 1981, he already had nearly as much time in Rotary as all the other club members put together. Now, some 30 years later, Arthur has clocked up over 50 years in Rotary. A remarkable achievement which was marked with a presentation of a certificate by club president, Nick Warrick.

Arthur moved to Cornwall with his wife Betty to manage a Caravan site at Duporth, where he still lives. Sadly, Betty died a few years ago, but she is remembered fondly by everyone she met. Arthur met Betty when he was in the Army and she was a nurse, and they lived together for many years in Buxton, where Arthur was a Rotary member for nearly 20 years. Arthur has observed great changes at Duporth over the years he has been there, but he remarks that the people now living around him are terrific. "When they see me struggling with my rubbish, they rush over to help; they are most kind".

When he moved to Cornwall, Arthur brought with him a tremendous amount of experience and common sense that was invaluable in helping to establish the Rotary Club of Lostwithiel, which was less than 2 years old when Arthur joined. A popular member, Arthur was elected club president in 1987, but with a strong Midlands accent he brought a new sound to Cornish place names (he still has problems with Boconnoc, which in Derbyshire sounds like Buck-a-nuc). Throughout his time with the club, Arthur has always been a conscientious and reliable member. Even well into his 80s, he would always be on hand to greet visitors at Lostwithiel's Charity Beer Festival.

Sadly, due to failing health, Arthur has now had to hang up his Rotary Wheel, but club members' voted unanimously to make him an Honorary Member, which Arthur was able to accept at a club meeting earlier this month. At the meeting, Arthur spoke passionately of his time in Rotary and the good that the club had done over the years, and he declared most emphatically that the Rotary Club of Lostwithiel was the best club in the world, which generated a great cheer from assembled members.
