Corm Planting

Every year Falmouth Rotary purchases crocus corms to be planted by children from Falmouth primary schools. The money for the corms goes towards eradicating the Polio virus.

On a cool but clear Tuesday afternoon Class 1of Marlborough Primary School walked down to Kimberley Park to plant 4,000 crocus bulbs for Rotary. Led by their class teacher Kerri, here in a blue hat in the background, they arrived full of enthusiasm for the job. Each sub group was given a bucket of corms and they soon made short work of the task. Also in the background are Nicola, Jack and Julian of the Town Council’s gardening team who very kindly prepared the ground by making 4,000  holes so all the kids had to do was pop in the crocuses. Our grateful thanks to them.

The crocus corms had been purchased by the Rotary club of Falmouth in aid of Rotary’s  39 year campaign to rid the world of the Polio virus. 1,000 case of Polio a day when we started and only 64 this year. Every trace of the virus has to be eliminated otherwise it will come back so the task goes on.  These are purple crocuses which represent the colour of the ink each vaccinated child under 5 puts their little finger in to show they have been vaccinated. A purple flower for a purple pinkie.
