Rotary responds to Nepal disaster
The Rotary Club of Falmouth has donated £5,000 to Shelterbox for disaster relief in Nepal.
Shelterbox was started as a Millenium Project by the Helston Lizard Rotary Club back in 2000. It went on to become a stand-alone organisation known throughout the world for its very effective relief work, often with logistical support through Rotary Clubs in the disaster region.
In 2012 Shelterbox became a Rotary International Global Partner for disaster relief and recovery. It provides technical expertise, shelter assessment and essential aid, backed up by Rotary’s massive global network of 1.4 million members across 200 countries.
Supported now by individual donations as well as Rotary Clubs around the world, the charity has its head office in Truro and Rotarians continue as volunteers, staff and response team members.
On 26 August, devastating flash floods swept through northern Nepal, affecting the districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading near the border with Tibet. Homes, roads, bridges and buildings were swept away, while key infrastructure, including power facilities, suffered significant damage.
The sudden and intense surge of water was reportedly caused by a glacier collapse around 5,200 metres high in the Himalayas, near the Nepal-Tibet border. Mud, ice and rock reportedly surged into the Bhote Koshi River from the Tibet side of the border, creating a powerful torrent that travelled downstream through communities in both Nepal and Tibet. Villages including Manakamana and Khadga Bhanjyang were among the hardest hit, with reports suggesting some settlements have been almost completely destroyed.
According to local authorities, at least 1,200 people have been killed, and more than 4,200 are missing
