We were approached by a retired local teacher, John, who now divides his time between homes in England and Tanzania.
When in Tanzania John works as a volunteer at Lysikika and other schools, in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Despite its stunning location the region is extremely poor.
Callington were invited to consider assisting with projects that would improve the educational opportunities for the students. These have included:
Lysikika school had access to some scrub land, which John suggested could be used to grow their own.
Callington partnered up with Morden Rotary club (London) of which John was president.
Together we provided funding to purchace fertilizer & seed. A local contractor was also hired to help plough the plot.
Our next goal was to provide handwashing facilities adjacent to the toilets.
Educating students why it is important to wash their hands and how to do so was a key aspect of the work.
Following a severe storm, the footings of the original toilet block were wased away, leaving the building in an unsafe condition.
Coming soon, links to pictures and greater detail of each project.
