WHY PURPLE CROCUS PLANTS?
The purple crocus is the Rotary worldwide symbol for the eradication of Polio.
Rotary have planted purple crocus bulbs to signify our support for our "End Polio Now" campaign which is in the final stages of eradicating Polio worldwide. The purple colour was chosen to duplicate the dye applied to the little fingers of children who have been given the vaccine the "purple pinkie".
This is something The Burton Rotary Club has been involved with for many years, planting thousands of bulbs. We would like to continue raising awareness of Polio through planting crocus bulbs around Burton town.
There are now 5 sites around Burton where the purple crocus are in full bloom, The Monks garden, Queen's hospital, Pirelli Stadium, St Peters church at Stapenhill and Burton Station.
Over 4000 crocus were planted this year by our team of Station Adopter Volunteers when the Autumn planting was done and have bloomed wonderfully, in spite of the local squirrels.
Here are some lovely recent shots from the locations.
