Welwyn Hatfield Young Chef competition for primary schools

Thu, Jul 6th 2023 at 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

The competition is organised by The Food Teacher as the culmination of a curriculum project and is supported by WGC Rotary.

The Food Teacher, an organisation based in Harpenden, have been trying to encourage the teaching of food preparation and nutrition in primary schools. They have been running curriculum time course in a number of areas of the country including, for the last four years, Welwyn Hatfield. WGC Rotary have supported them by funding kits of food preparation and cooking equipment for individual schools and helping to organise celebration events, when selected students from each participating school are invited to come and demonstrate their skills.

This year, four students, all aged 10, Elrini, Katie, Lily and  Thomas from St Michael's, Woolmer Green and Homerswood school took part on a Thursday afternoon at Ridgeway Academy. They produced a variety of dishes, all of high quality and gave the 3 judges a very difficult task, but Lily's menu was declared the best overall.

Our thanks to Ridgeway Academy for hosting, to Katharine Tate and her team for making it possible, chef Patti Sloley for being head judge and presenting prizes and certificates and the school staff who accompanied and supported their students.

An excellent afternoon, and maybe we will see some of the students in the Rotary Young Chef competition in the future!
