Sue Smith from the Gloucester Civic Trust

On Wednesday 24th May 2023 we were provided with a very interesting and enjoyable presentation provided by Sue Smith of the Gloucester Civic Trust. Sue told us about the origins of the Civic Trust which has recently celebrated it’s 50th Anniversary. The Trust was officially formed in 1972 and essentially came about following the awareness that there needed to be protection for many of Gloucester's historic properties, which had suffered as a result of 1960’s redevelopment with a “Demolish and rebuild with new” approach. The catalyst of this came about following the closure of Southern’s stores - a well known family grocery business in Northgate street. During the subsequent demolition of the building, it was revealed that the Victorian Facade hid a medieval timber framed building. Sadly it was too late to save the building, despite much public outcry, and the need to protect similar buildings was identified, resulting in the formation of the trust and it’s official recognition in 1972. Since then, the Civic Trust has grown and developed into a very effective organisation, promoting the awareness and need to protect many of Gloucester's historic buildings. Our club is to now visit the Trust’s museum in Westgate street as a follow on to this most informative and enjoyable club meeting. Similar meetings and events are regularly held by Stonehouse Rotary club, and visitors are welcome to our meetings. Further information and a programme of events can be obtained from members and our club Website.

In November 2019 Gloucester Civic Trust agreed a licence to operate The Folk with Gloucester with City Council.    An early impression of the property:-
