The Rotary Club of Ossett is a long standing supporter of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) service.
Kerry Garner, Regional Fund Raising Manager for West and South Yorkshire, attended the Club
meeting this week to update the members on YAA activities and to receive a donation from Ossett
Rotarians.
The statistics are quite remarkable. The YAA operates 365 days a year and covers a population of 5
million across 4 million acres. They have two helicopters and last year undertook nearly 300
missions. To keep the two helicopters going they need to raise £12,000 every day, that’s £4.4 million
a year. The helicopters were replaced late last year at a cost of £12m but this has reduced
maintenance costs, increased operational time and improved the service. The new helicopters are
capable of night flying, have more space and are better equipped.
Funds to support the service are raised through sponsorship, events and donations. The YAA do not
‘door knock’ and all volunteers carry ID.
Their message “Yorkshire Air Ambulance saves lives, one day it could be yours” says it all and the
Club is pleased to continue its support in Paul Tinker’s Presidential year.
A vote of thanks was given by Rotarian Graham Scott and a cheque for £1,000 was presented to
Kerry by Past President June Drysdale.
