John Owen, rector of Beaconhurst School was guest speaker at the Club this evening. President Nominee George Morrison welcomed John and visiting Rotarians Kevin and Sally Till, from Woolwich.
John gave a history of Beaconhust School, where there has been a school on the current site at Bridge of Allan since 1919, when the Beacon School for Girls was established. In the same year, Hurst Grange, a boys' school in Stirling, opened and the two schools merged to form Beaconhurst Grange in 1976.
John went on to reflect on the excellent academic and sporting achievements of the school and noted that Beaconhurst is a ‘Round Square’ school along with only 140 other schools worldwide that have a holistic approach to education based around six ideals; Idealism, Democracy, Environment, Adventure, Leadership and Service.
The school has values of ambition, respect, resilience, integrity and empathy and develops sports for life.
After a lively question and answer session, Glen Montgomery proposed the vote of thanks, reflecting on the success of Beaconhust, despite the demise of numerous schools in Bridge of Allan over the years
