Lunch Meeting - President Ian exchanges banner with Norwegian Rotarian

Wed, Dec 3rd 2014 at 12:00 am - 12:00 am

Todays lunch meeting was attended by Norwegian Rortarian Svein Grimsby Gartner and his wife (No it's not a typo, he is called Grimsby!!). Svein exchanged banners with President Ian and gave a brief history about himself.

Sveins' name link to Grimsby was not clear, but apparently because of it, he became a distant supporter of Grimsby Town Football Club.  He has visited the UK on several occasions, but this is his first visit to Grimsby.

Svein is a member at a small Rotary Club, with a mixed membership (29 gentlemen and 1 lady!).  He is a market gardener, and has developed a way to grow strawberries throughout the Norwegian winter using specialised greenehouses and lighting systems - apparenty the only one in the world to date who can achieve this. His strawberries are very sweet and delicious, however the EU refused a development project he applied for, as they stated strawberry farming projects can only be supported in hotter climates such as Portugal and Spain! - It's interesting to see that the Norwegians also suffer EU frustrations.
