Speaker Meeting - Letter Boxes

Wed, Aug 20th 2014 at 12:00 am - 12:00 am

Speaker Trevor Radway

Whilst we might take our local letter box for granted, our speaker Trevor Radway,  sees each one with its own history and heritage.

They were introduced in 1853 with the first ones being square and hexagonal (the Penfold)and you can still see one in Montpellier, Cheltenham today .

In just a few years they all became round pillar shapes hence the term "pillar box" and were painted the standard red.

Trevor continues to make discoveries and he thinks he has discovered one which was once painted blue in Cirencester.

Without people like Trevor who is an avid guardian of lost and unloved boxes our street scene would be much less interesting.

Next time you go down your street take an extra special look at a VR or GR letter box and you will be surprised at its detailed design.  What will people in Nailsworth make of their three golden painted pillar boxes in years to come?
