Organised by Rotarian John Morris, he and two of our local Doctors, addressed the students during morning assemblies.Perhaps unlike their Grandparents, many of them would be unfamiliar with the horrors of Polio, a disease thankfully eliminated from Europe and most of the world.
They were able to explain the horrors of polio and how with a last effort, it can be eradicated.
From more than 300,000 cases thirty years ago there are now less than 300 cases per year in three endemic countries of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. Continuing immunisation of children until there are no new occurences, will eliminate the disease forever as with smallpox in 1970.
The School chose to support the Rotary campaign, to pay for mass vaccination in just three countries, where Polio still remains.
Students were able to raise the magnificent sum of £427 at their "dress down" day on 13 February. This will be matched by and extra £854 from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation - and thus $2000 of benefit overall.
