Our speaker was Dr Roma Walker, who described a different approach to healthcare in Zanzibar - whereby the charity - Health Improvement Project: Zanzibar (HIPZ) - has a contract to operate one of the major hospitals on the island.
She outlined many of the problems they face locally - unreliable water supply and electric supply - the thought of having to finish a caesarean sectionmoperation by the light of a mobile phone!
The doctors involved in this projet have usually just come fom medical school and give their labour voluntarily.
Nailsea and backwell Rogtary members also joined us on this evening as it is a project that they are already supporting in a major way, and having obtained some matching grants from the Rotary Foundation on a worldwide basis. Dfinitely a projet that we will onsider seriously.
