JAMES’S ‘THE LONG RIDE’ NEEDS MORE FUNDS FOR HIS SPECIAL CHARITIES

When current Bexhill Rotary’s President James Slinn (pictured) took office last July, he vowed to cycle 2,500 miles by the end of June 2024 to raise valuable funds for two marvellous charities that do incredible work giving families of people suffering from life ending conditions of dementia and cancer - DISC Dementia Support and the Sara Lee Trust.

James Slinn says, “A very close friend of mine was struck down with an aggressive form of dementia and died in 2022. We knew each other at school and afterwards had many adventures together, and I miss him terribly. All I can do now is to set myself a tough challenge in his memory to raise funds for the organisations that can help families come to terms with these personal tragedies. DISC helped my friend’s wife and family cope during his decline and early death.

James is now well into his cycling target and he has also raised around £500. He can’t do all this entirely on his own, so if you want to help James with this

Whatever donation you can make, be it large or not so large, all contributions to James’s effort will be much appreciated.

DISC Dementia Support (www.discdementiasupport.org) was formed in March 2018 by Louise Stears-Smith and Emma Jones to provide facilitated support groups but, when asked by a group of carers to support their caring roles, it became apparent that carers needed a lot more. Both Louise and Emma already had extensive experience in supporting carers of people living with Dementia and they were determined to make sure that they received all the support that was so necessary, so they have developed a whole range of services more of which are detailed on their website.

The Sara Lee Trust (www.saraleetrust.org) formed in 1996 by Sally and Jeremy Lee to carry on the vision of their daughter, Sara, who contracted a rare form of cancer when she was only 30 years old, and who sadly died two years later in 1995. Before her death Sara Lee was determined to help others with cancer to receive a whole range of different therapies which at the time were not always easy to obtain. The charity supports people in Hastings and Rother who have been diagnosed with cancer or another life threatening illness by providing free counselling, complimentary therapies and group activities designed to work alongside medical treatment. Sara’s vision lives on and thousands of people have been helped with her charity offering high quality care to those who need it most. Much more about the work of the Sara Lee Trust can be found on their website.
