The Tower Trudge is a nominal 10-mile walk and is suitable for accompanied children. This year we used a new the route that takes in a greater part of Darwen Moors for a change while still visiting Tockholes Woods. There was also a five mile route for those who felt the full route too demanding. Each walker completing the Trudge received a personalised certificate.
The weather was kind this year with sunshine all day. The temperature in the valleys was pleasant but the wind was quite cold on the open moor.
In spite of the walk being a week later than usual due to the Bank Holiday date, the cold spring had put back the bluebells and there were magnificent shows in both Roddlesworth and Sunnyhurst Woods.
110 walkers started from the Olde England Kiosk in Sunnyhurst Woods and they made very good time. The first walkers on the 5 mile route took just over 2 hours and those on the 10 miler about 3 hours. The final walkers returned at 2.30 pm. All agreed that it had been a hard walk, but very enjoyable. Thankfully Bolton Mountain Rescue had a relaxing day in attendance with no calls on their services. As usual, their presence gave all the participants and the organisers a great sense of assurance.
