About us

The following is our usual programme of events during the year, which starts in July.

We are always open to new and varied requests for support so if you know or have a cause get in touch

RYLA

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. For many years our club has been delighted to select and fund two awardee places on the RYLA leadership courses. These have been sixth form students from Rastrick High School, Brighouse High School, Lightcliffe Academy and Hipperholme Grammar School.

The courses are professionally run with the assistance of Rotary staff and a Rotary Mentor for each team and held at Hebden Hey, Hebden Bridge for the purpose of developing leadership qualities in our young people.

Each year the District accommodates 80 awardees, 40 in each week at the end of July and beginning of August, split into 5 teams of 8.

Our awardees are then invited to our club to give a short presentation about their experiences after which they become true RYLArians. This is always an enjoyable evening.

The district 1040 RYLA course is acknowledged to be the best leadership development course for young people in the UK. It uses experiential learning through outdoor and indoor activities, with feedback from the staff, mentors and most importantly fellow team members providing an unparalleled environment in which to safely learn and practice leadership skills which develop confidence and will enhance any CV. The awardees rapidly make friends with 40 complete strangers and many have described their RYLA week as the “best week of my lifeso far”.

Each year 6 Schools in the Brighouse area award Rotary prizes to pupils who have contributed to the community. Each pupil receives a trophy to keep for a year and a gift voucher provided by the club. The current president has the honor of attending the school prizegiving evening to award the trophy.

Late October work gets underway to distribute poppies and collecting tins to shops and schools in the Brighouse area to support the British Legion Poppy Appeal. On Remembrance day the President attends and we donate to provide a wreath for the cenotaph.

Technology Tournament - A Halifax Rotary event, we ensure local Brighouse schools take part and attend to help the day go smoothly.

We join forces with 3 other local fund raising groups and take the Santa Sleigh round the streets of different areas of Brighouse. Well supported by all residents of these areas this raises funds which are ring-fenced for local deserving causes in the Brighouse area. Usual routes are: Monday: Smithy Carr Lane Area Tuesday: Hipperholme Wednesday: Bailiff Bridge Thursday: Woodhouse Friday: Tootill Lane area

We take the time to visit the rest centre in the middle of Brighouse and put up all the Christmas Decorations and if needs be buy some replacements. This is greeted by the volunteers as "the start of Christmas"! A few weeks into December, we take over the running of the rest centre and provide free tea, coffee and mince pies to anyone calling in. (The mince pies are kindly donated by Tesco)

The start of December sees the dedication of the annual "Tree of Lights" at Sainsburys. To remember a loved one at Christmas people "buy" a light and all proceeds go towards that years announced charity or worthy cause. We provide the Christmas tree and Lights and Sainburys provide the power and collect donations. Thanks Sainsburysbr />

Primary Schools Quiz

This has become an annual event for us and is usually held in March and kindly hosted by Hipperholme Grammar School. Each of our BrighousePrimary Schools is invited to enter a team of four pupils who are tested on 10 rounds of questions on a wide range of topics. We have always beenvery impressed with the knowledge displayed by the children and thewinners and runners up are invited to our Rotary District Final. A cup isawarded to the winning team, medals for members of the winning and runners up team and certificates for all.  This year's event will be held at Hipperholme Grammar School on Wednesday 6th March from 2pm.

Each year the Club organise a Charity Quiz Night at Hove Edge Bowling Club. Between 15 and 20 teams from organisations in and around the local community usually enter and compete for a trophy and the honour of being crowned Quiz Champion. This years competition was won by Rastrick Cricket Club.Teams comprise a maximum of 5 members and answer 10 rounds of questions on subjects such as history, geography, sport, current affairs and general knowledge. Proceeds from the evening go to a chosen charity and in 2018 we used the money raised to fund the production of a Talking Book for the blind. The 2019 event will be held on 14 March.

Each year the president of the club chooses an International destination and they and members of spend a long bank holiday weekend there experiencing the culture in the company of friends. Previous destinations have included; Germany Spain France Wales
