DISTRICT GOVERNOR CHERYL – JANUARY IS VOCATIONAL SERVICE MONTH

I’m sure you have all heard many times over Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, nevertheless please allow me to repeat it.

I will never tire of hearing about all the great events that have taken place leading up to Christmas, and a few after too! The weather tried its best to disrupt our many Santa’s Sleigh routes, but with quick thinking and a jiggle of times and dates, most areas were covered.

Most of my club visits are now completed, with half a dozen or so due in the new year, and still four clubs not having arranged dates for visits. These will be completed soon.

Your secretary and president will have received details of Royston Rotary who have applied to transfer in to our district. Clubs have until the 16th January to raise any objections – I’m not expecting any. They are a lively group of about 30, who already work with their local clubs who are in our district already. Hopefully they will be officially welcomed in to our family at the start of the new Rotary year. In the mean time they will be attending PEPS and District Assembly as well as social events, so please do introduce yourselves and make them feel welcome. 

I am in the middle of a trip to India. I was invited by DG Ruchir Jani and his wife Sohangi to attend their District Conference, and to do a little sight-seeing and visiting Rotary projects. Although I was in Jaipur I was unable to visit the Jaipur Limb hospital, but I was told all about it by my guide! However once in Vapi I was given a guided tour of the totally funded and run by Rotary hospital. A fantastic achievement over 40 years, where state of the art medical help is given to anyone who attends. They now also have a fully functioning dialysis ward where completely free treatment is given, for which they are fund raising. It is something worth our district looking at to help with.

DG Ruchir and I would like to encourage a friendship connection between our Districts, and with this in mind I have introduced their DGE Pinky to our DGE Dave, and their DGN Anish to our DGN Mary. Watch this space! They are also interested in doing a youth exchange.

Six months gone and six months to go – on paper anyway. In reality Chalmers, Dave, Mary, Vijay, and myself work very closely together so that there is continuity – something that doesn’t always happen in other districts. I wish you all a great 6 months to come. Remember to get your numbers in for our conference, and keep the District Governor Challenge going!

Next month is the roll out of Rotary 2, the new membership initiative. There will be new promos to use and help with membership.

ROTARY DAY 2018

In the New Year, we will be sharing details of how to tell Rotary’s polio story as part of Rotary Day on 23rd February 2018.  It will be a good way to engage with the public as part of Rotary 2 and could potentially attract membership enquiries as a number of clubs found from their World Polio Day activities.  
The main focus of activity on Rotary Day we’d love clubs to get involved with are mock polio immunisation days at indoor venues in your communities, such as schools and shopping centres.
So get set for another great opportunity to engage the public on our greatest humanitarian achievement and your local club. Remember to talk to your District End Polio Now Champion to see how they and the district team can help you.

CROCUS BUTTONHOLES

These beautiful purple crocus buttonholes continue to be an excellent awareness and fundraising tool for the End Polio Now campaign and will be an ideal takeaway for members of the public getting involved with your plans on Rotary Day.
Speak to your District Foundation Chairman to see what supplies are available to you in your district. A small reserve stock is also available for ordering in multiples of 100, please contact Mike Parry for information on costs and delivery charges.
With a lead time of four months for production of the buttonholes the next window for bulk ordering will be in April 2018, in time for World Polio Day in October 2018.
