Rotary District 1260 Inspired by World Sailor Jasmine Harrison

Brookmans Park Rotary Club invited clubs from Rotary District 1260 (Beds, Bucks & Herts) members gathered for an unforgettable summer evening at The Woodman Inn, enjoying a carvery meal followed by an outdoor presentation on the patio.

With a projector set up under the clear evening sky, 47 Rotarians and guests representing 13 Rotary Clubs gathered to hear from adventurer and ocean rower Jasmine Harrison. Jasmine shared the remarkable story of her solo circumnavigation of the globe in a 19-foot plywood yacht during the Mini Globe Race.

District 1260 was also delighted to welcome members from the Rotary Club of London (District 1130) and Thirsk Rotary Club (District 1040), which is Jasmine’s home club.

A special thank you was extended to Judith Diment MBE—President of the Rotary Club of London, Chair of Rotary International’s Polio Advocacy Committee, UK PolioPlus National Advocacy Advisor, and Rotary Representative to the Commonwealth—who accompanied Jasmine for the evening.

A Journey of Endurance, Conservation, and Fellowship

Jasmine captivated the audience with candid insights into the extreme physical and mental stamina required for solo transatlantic and transoceanic sailing. She described battling severe sleep deprivation, critical equipment failures, rogue waves, and 70-knot winds whilst rounding the Cape of Good Hope. From hand-steering through the Great Barrier Reef at night to traversing the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, her determination left a lasting impression on all present.

Her presentation also brought environmental issues into sharp focus. Jasmine shared eye-opening accounts of plastic pollution on some of the planet’s most remote islands, where beaches were littered with waste and turtles were forced to nest amongst debris—a sobering reminder of the urgent need for marine conservation.

Throughout her epic voyage, Rotary clubs worldwide offered practical support, warm hospitality, and opportunities to deliver humanitarian aid. In locations such as Lanzarote, Panama, and Rodrigues, Jasmine connected with local Rotarians to help distribute school bags, books, clothing, and food to isolated communities, whilst using her platform to encourage young women to explore Rotary service.

The event served as a testament to the international reach and spirit of Rotary, demonstrating how fellowship, community action, and shared values continue to unite members across borders.
