ROTARY'S FIRST, FIRST LADY PUTS HER BODY ON THE LINE FOR CHARITY

Tue, Aug 9th 2011 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

Rotary Wessex District Governor, Caroline Millman, took the plunge for charity today when, along with three other intrepid Rotarians, she dropped into Portsmouth to drop down the 350 feet outside of the Spinnaker Tower.

Caroline, Ray Burman, President of Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland (Rotary GB&I), his wife Victoria, and Lymington Rotary member and businessman, Robert Ellis, put aside any thoughts of vertigo to raise a considerable sum for charity (see below).

With this being Caroline and Robert’s first attempt at abseiling, the start was fraught with nerves, but within a few minutes of stepping off the platform, all four landed safely at the foot of the tower – exhilarated by the thrill of success.

A rather breathless Caroline said on arrival at the bottom:

‘We might have been nervous, but in a strange way we were all looking forward to this. When you get up there, it does look a long way down. It’s certainly not for the faint hearted, but this was for a very worthwhile charity that, with the help of Rotary, has very nearly been eradicated worldwide, and once you get started, there is only one way down. I have to say, this is something, now that we have done it, that none of us would have missed.

‘We all wanted to raise money for PolioPlus – a Rotary inspired initiative that, after some 20 years, is on the brink of eradicating polio worldwide.’
