Domestic Abuse and Violence Against the Person
1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men in the UK experience some form of domestic abuse in their lifetime. it is likely that many Rotarians will: know someone affected by abuse or violence; have experienced, or perpetrated abuse themselves; supported their local domestic abuse charity; or are working in other ways to make a positive impact against domestic abuse and violence against the person.
The most dangerous time for a person in an abusive relationship is when they are about to leave or a relationship is ending. Without specialist support and safety planning, it is often not safe to just leave. Please take care on what you do and don’t say or do.
As Rotarians we are not experts and should suggest people seek help from professionals. However, we do have a role to play, and this Guide will help you know what to do initially.
Don’t forget to take care of yourself - listening to another person tell you they are in an abusive relationship can be very upsetting.
The key things to initially consider are: Stay Safe, Believe, Empower, Take Care.
