Young Environmentalist 2025 District Final

This Year's Theme was Waste Minimisation and Carbon Reduction

The aim of the competition was to encourage the development of environmental skills by:-

• Interacting with the environment
• Addressing environmental issues
• Developing and exploring solutions to the issues
• Exploring, investigating, and undertaking an environmentally sustainable project

26 young people took part in the District  Young Environmentalist final held in the state rooms at Kimbolton Castle. 

The three winners were: 

14-17 Age Group Winners:- Kimbolton School -  Kimbolton Castle Rotary Club 
They had surveyed both the pupils and catering staff with re-gard to food choices and portion size so as to reduce the waste. Currently they have 28 bags of food waste per day. The school grow some of their own vegetables and have set up a wormery to offset some of the food waste.

11-13 Age Group Winners:- Great Staughton Girl Guides -  Kimbolton Castle Rotary Club 
Their presentation was on saving clothes from land-fill and how they can be re-purposed. With photographs of the original garments, we could see how, simply by cutting and resewing, a com-pletely different item could emerge.

Under 10’s Age Group Winners:- Stukely Primary School -  Huntingdon Rotary Club
Children from Stukeley Meadows Primary school, were telling of the positivity of planting a beech hedge. Not only does it provide a wind break, there is shelter for wild-life and food. They also showed exam-ples of recycling everyday household items, such as milk bottles. These can be cut down and the bases used to bring on small plants.

Thanks to our judges, Steve Legg, Lawrence Leger and Chair Richard Shaw. There were some wonderful and innovative projects including reuse of discarded clothes as new creative inventions.
