Two Young Environmentalist awards have been presented to St John’s C of E Primary School Eco group, Huntingdon.
The theme for the competition was Waste Minimisation and the school’s Eco group worked hard to reduce waste in school and the local environment. They carried out many projects including creating a school Eco Code, recycling used pens, organising litter picks at school, supporting a campaign to limit vehicle speeds to 20mph outside the school, helping create an Eco garden and planting trees and wildflowers.
Their work achieved first place in the Rotary District 1070 Young Environmentalist Youth Award and a fantastic 2nd place in the National competition.
The Eco group continue to support environmental projects at their school and Huntingdon Cromwell Rotary will provide help and financial support.
Our community litter pick at the Ise Valley Pavilion had 17 volunteers join us, including the Mayor of Kettering!
We collected 15 bags of litter and 1 bag of cans which will be sent to the Heli Pad Appeal.
Celia kindly made us her lemon drizzle cake and we served tea and coffee afterwards as a thank you for everyone that joined in.
Carol and David Kendrick have achieved a Wildlife Gardening Award from the local Wildlife Trust. This is because we allow our grass to grow throughout the Summer which encourages the growth of different wild flowers.
We have a wildlife pond which supports newts, pondskaters and water boatmen. We feed the birds daily and have sighted 25 species of bird in the garden to date. We have frequent sightings of hedgehogs, grey squirrels, wood mice and foxes. Butterflies, moths and other insects abound, and bats can be seen most evenings. It is a wildlife haven but gives us much pleasure too.
