Box Clever

Box Clever is a new Rotary District 1070 environmental initiative for 2026/27, bringing Rotary clubs and local communities together to create practical homes for wildlife.

The aim is simple but ambitious: to build and/or distribute at least 300 wildlife boxes across the District, providing valuable nesting, roosting and shelter opportunities for hedgehogs, birds, bats and insects.

These simple structures can make a real difference. As natural habitats become increasingly fragmented, they provide safe places for wildlife to nest, hibernate and shelter is an easy and highly visible way for communities to support local biodiversity.

How can Rotary clubs get involved?

Clubs can build their own boxes, work with local schools and community groups, commission or purchase boxes from local makers, or help distribute boxes to suitable locations. The initiative is deliberately flexible, allowing clubs to develop projects that suit their local environment and community.

Boxes could be installed in parks, churchyards, school grounds, community gardens, nature reserves, farms and private gardens, creating a network of small wildlife habitats across District 1070.

It is suggested that for the most part boxes are provided to end user to put in place for a donation to your charity funds.

More than just a box

Box Clever is also about engaging people with nature. Building and installing wildlife boxes provides an opportunity to involve young people, families, conservation groups, landowners and local communities – while raising awareness of the importance of biodiversity.

Every box is a small action. 300 boxes could provide hundreds of new opportunities for wildlife to thrive.
