A series of projects carried out by Rotary Clubs in the District

Rotary E-Club of District 1070

Biodiversity Improvement
As part of Malcolm Arnold Academy's Green Day, our Rotary Club partnered with Year 7 students to create and install eight bee and insect hotels to support pollinators and enhance local biodiversity.

Each hotel measures 45cm x 45cm and was handcrafted from wood by Kevin Willis, husband of our President and a teacher at the Academy. Rotary members sourced a variety of natural materials, including bamboo, hollow stems, pinecones and bark, which the students used to design and fill the hotel compartments.

Once completed, the hotels were installed around the school grounds as part of a rewilding initiative. Collectively, the hotels have the potential to provide nesting, shelter and overwintering habitat for hundreds, and potentially thousands, of solitary bees, ladybirds, lacewings and other beneficial insects over their lifetime.

The hotels will be regularly inspected, maintained and monitored by Kevin and the Year 7 students, creating an ongoing educational and environmental legacy.
