Mel Thomas

Meldin (Mel/MT) Thomas QPM was born in Leicester to first-generation Windrush parents from Antigua and has dedicated his life to serving and supporting his community.

After beginning his career in leisure and fitness, Mel joined Leicestershire Police in 1991. Over a distinguished 30-year career, he served as a Constable, Sergeant, Acting Inspector and Operations Training Supervisor, helping shape officer training in personal safety, first aid, public order, Taser, CBRN and fitness. Following retirement, he continues his work as a Positive Action Officer, promoting equality, diversity and inclusion within policing and encouraging people from underrepresented communities to consider policing as a career.

A passionate mentor and sportsman, Mel has competed nationally and internationally in American football, basketball and boxing, winning a silver medal at the 2003 World Police and Fire Games.

His commitment to charitable fundraising has helped raise almost £500,000 for a wide range of causes, supporting families, children and cancer charities. In recognition of his outstanding service to policing and the wider community, he was awarded the Queen's Police Medal (QPM) in 2021.

A familiar face on television and radio, Mel has appeared on BBC, Sky News and Channel 4's Hunted. He is an engaging and inspiring speaker whose message centres on leadership, resilience, inclusion and unlocking human potential.
