The Annual Sportsmans Dinner organised by the Rotary Club of Lanark took place on Friday the 30March at Ravenstruther Village Hall and was voted by all there to have been a great success. Not only was the meal well received but over 100 guests were very well entertained by three well known Speakers
Jimmy Nicholl. After his playing career with Manchester United, Glasgow Rangers and in the Northern Ireland team, Jimmy had two spells managing Raith Rovers in Fife. He even led them to a famous victory over Celtic in the 1995 Scottish League Cup. Jimmy had a wonderful way, full of humour, of relating his experiences both at Club and International level.
Jimmy was followed by that well known horse racing trainer Ian Semple who until about 2 years ago was at the Belstane Stables in Carluke and is now at Burnwynd Racing Stables in Strathaven. Ians experience and knowledge of the horse racing world is encyclopaedic and his stories had everyone rolling about laughing.
To finish the evening, Duncan Cameron entertained with a very wide range of stories from his career. Duncan was educated in Lanark, Motherwell, Aberdeen and France. He is multi-lingual and can even order mince and tatties in both Spanish and Italian. Since retiring from his career as Scottish Manager of American Airlines, Duncan has travelled the world as an after dinner speaker and that experience showed on Friday by keeping everyone in fits of laughter.
Although the Club organising Committee had to put a lot of effort into organising the evening they all felt it worthwhile. The Committee wish to thank all of the Lanark traders who donated prizes for the raffle which helped to raise more funds for the Charities supported by Rotary.
