Twickenham upon Thames Rotary (TuT Rotary) is a group of 35 members who share a common goal to use their time and effort, skills knowledge and experience to the benefit of others and have loads of fun in the process. Our motto is “Service Above Self” and we provide support and help where we can. It is also about giving time, for example by teaching chess or conducting mock interviews in local schools.
We support charities and projects especially local groups projects and Charities that address needs such as isolation and loneliness in the community or help children and adults with special needs. Internationally we often join with other Rotary clubs to fund projects to address issues like access to clean water or illiteracy. For over thirty years, Rotary has worked hard to end polio throughout the world. There is more information in the section on this site: Polio Eradication.
If you are reading this as a prospective new member, why not come and have an informal chat, or join us at one of our Monday dinner evenings. We would be delighted to hear from you and answer any questions you may have. Email: chack@onetel.com or secretarytutrotary@gmail.com for more information, or click on Contact above.
We also use our time to raise funds. We run stalls at the local fairs, where we sell plants or books, records or CDs and DVDs. We take our sleigh around the streets at Christmas playing music and giving out sweets and cheerful Santa messages to the children, providing a little special magic in the cold evenings. And of course, we collect outside the supermarkets where we often meet some interesting people!
Rotary has another motto: Family First, Job Second, Rotary Third. We don’t expect our Rotarians to do more than they can manage within their normal life. Family and jobs must always come first and after that everyone tries to do as much as they can to help. Rotary is like a second family, we are all friends and enjoy each other’s company. We enjoy meeting up at the Monday evening dinners and putting the world to rights, hearing from a myriad of different speakers about subjects ranging from charities to wine tasting and everything in between. Then there are the trips out: visits to places in and around the capital, to museums or tours of landmark buildings, the annual tour of a fabulous garden by one of our very knowledgeable horticultural experts, the international evenings with a foreign theme, food and music accordingly, and the annual international trip to a European City.
How does our group work? We are divided into Committees, each focussing on specific areas: Local Community, International, Youth and Vocational, Fundraising, Public Relations and Membership. Click here to find out about the functions of each Committee.
