Rotary Scholar heads for Ukraine
Rotary Scholar Nyathioma Njehu graduated at the Royal Holloway, University of London last December with the award of her MSc with merit in Clinical Psychology.
Rotary Club of Staines had joined with the Rotary Club of Nairobi, Rotary District 1145 and the Rotary Foundation to fully sponsor Nyathioma to attend a one year post graduate course in clinical psychology at the Royal Holloway University.
Nyathioma is now taking up a post as Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Advisor for the Ukraine Region based in Dnipro with an international NGO (Medical Teams International).
Nyathioma said "Studying an MSc in Clinical Psychology at Royal Holloway, University of London was something I could only dream about, but thanks to Rotary it became a reality. Not only did I receive top-notch education from one of the most highly regarded psychology departments, but I gained many rich experiences and perspectives as I lived, studied and worked in the UK for the first time".
She went on to say "It is definitely impossible to sum up and convey the impact being a Rotary scholar has had on me, because indeed it is indelible and lifelong. I am eager to fly the Rotary flag high and look forward to continue engaging with Rotary in various ways, with a strong hope of joining Rotary in the near future".
Nyathioma, who was born in Nairobi, completed her secondary education in Nairobi before attending the United States International University where she obtained first a BA Psychology (Cum Laude) and later a post-graduate diploma in Global Social Sustainable Enterprise. During her studies she also worked on gender violence and drug rehabilitation issues in Kenya.
Following graduation, she joined the Refugee Consortium of Kenya in their Dabaab office as a psychosocial support officer, later to be appointed the lead Psychosocial Counsellor for the Danish Refugee Centre in Dabaab. In 2019, she was appointed as the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Project manager with Medair, in a refugee camp in Leer, South Sudan. In this role she worked as part of a multi-cultural and technically diverse team to develop, lead, monitor and evaluate assigned projects. She also managed and trained local staff to meet international quality standards in mental health care delivery.

Despite Covid restrictions, Staines Rotary were able to take Santa on his usual Christmas rounds through to streets, assisted by groups of volunteer collectors raising funds for local charities.
