Farnborough Rotary has been a consistent supporter of and contributor to the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice for over 20 years. The Hospice is a well-known and highly respected centre for palliative care. which includes symptom management alongside social, practical, emotional and spiritual support. It helps people live as fully and as well as they can, to the end of their lives however long that may be. It is free for patients, their carers and family members.
Hospices are "not for profit" organisations and rely on charitable support from the public to fund their day-to-day operations and capital projects.
The Club held its first biennial Music in the Park (MIP) Concert in 2001 and since then has contibuted £525,000 to PTH's running costs from the eleven concerts held so far. The next MIP Concert is scheduled for July 2025.
In the Autumn of 2023 the Club learned of PTH's plans to rebuild its centre in Farnham. The £16m redevelopment project involved the demolition of the existing building and its replacement with a modern, "state of the art" hospice building focussing on the comfort of both the patient and their family, whilst providing greater operational efficiency and modern energy efficiency.
The Hospice is largely funding the project cost from its reserves and has largely completed a successful fundraising campaign to ensure that the rebuild is fully funded.
The Club quickly decided to launch a Global Grant Project aimed at furnishing and equipping eight of the new in-patient rooms. The Project has the full support of the District Executive for the area in which the Club operates. The furniture and equipment envisaged includes modern hospital grade beds & mattresses, chairs and a number of other items at a cost of approx. £11,000 per room. The Club decided to contribute £10,000 from its MIP reserves as its principal financial contribution to the Project. However, a Global Grant Project in Rotary terms necessitates securing additional funding from local and international Clubs & Districts. To date the Club has secured funding from ten of the Rotary Clubs within PTH's catchment area plus significant contributions from Clubs & Districts in three other countries. The amount raised so far represents 94% of the funding needed, leaving a shortfall of a little under £6,000.
To address this shortfall the Club is continuing to discuss the Project with other local and international Clubs, Districts and other sources, including local companies, organisations and the general public. We remain hopeful that the situation will be resolved before the end of the year.
