Our Contact Club is the Rotary Club of Condé St Amand, France.

FRIDAY 26 TO SUNDAY 28 SEPTEMBER 2025

By Margaret Martin

What a great trip we had. Every time I have visited our French friends we are always welcomed and looked after so well.  It was great that we had a good turnout this year and some Ewell Rotarians visiting for the first time. Thanks for organising our visit John.

Ewell Rotarians and family this year were:  John and Lynne Smith, Anne and Peter Heard, Andrew Heard, John and Jackie Brewer, our President Philip Day, John and Shiranee Davis, Maureen and Baron Kilminster and me.

We travelled by Eurostar this year which was so much better than driving.  It was very busy when we all arrived on Friday with long queues to check in, we really did not think we would leave on time, but we did. Once on the train everything ran smoothly although as with any trip there are always a few things that go wrong, and we did have some funny episodes!

When we arrived at Lille station there was a bit of a commotion with lots of police present - as we stood greeting our French hosts, they then hand cuffed three women - probably for shop lifting - all a bit dramatic for the start of our visit!  We headed off to the car park although Riad just could not remember where he had parked his car, how many times have we done that ourselves!!!.  Help from his fellow Rotarians the car was found and we headed off to various locations south of Lille.  Some of us had elected to stay in a hotel rather than being hosted by our French colleagues.  The hotel casino was where they used to have their Rotary meetings,  it was a hotel and casino and extremely busy with a steady stream of people visiting the casino.

We had time to relax and go the bar for drinks before being collected to head off for a meal in a lovely restaurant O Saint Martin in a village nearby.  Olivier has moved Rotary Clubs to the Rotary Club of Lille Sud and presented Philip with a pennant. When chatting Christophe discovered that he was born the same year that that Maureen and Baron were married so throughout the weekend kept introducing them as his Mama and Papa!

The next morning at breakfast Maureen was trying to break the coffee machine by jamming her teapot in the wrong place with a spurt of steam coming out as the machine was expecting a cup for coffee.  We all thought it was hilarious, not sure about the waitress who rescued Maureen’s teapot!! I was extolling the virtue of having a fridge in my room which I planned to take some milk from the restaurant to have with my tea, but Maureen said it was not a fridge but a spare duvet!  I brought a picture of my fridge down to breakfast to show her what a fridge looked like!!

We were collected and set off to the Douai Planetarium which was really interesting.  Before entering the Planetarium there were some great videos from astronauts on life in a space capsule.  I was looking at the way they went to the toilet and I heard a whoosh behind me which Shiranee pointed out was an actual demonstration of the toilet!!

In the Planetarium the seats went backwards as we were entertained with an amazing trip in a spaceship. They were so comfortable – Maureen’s task was to nudge Baron as he stated snoring!  Sadly she could not reach me or Peter Heard when we joined in!! We headed off to a Pizzeria for lunch.

After lunch we went back to the same location in Douai Arkeos, for a visit to a medieval village which was great.  Amazingly I managed to find a medieval tavern which had a bar which was open!!  I started with a pot of tea then joined Baron in medieval wine which was great.  Maureen was at it again!!  She took her tea bag out of her cup and put in the ash tray (with ash in!!) then realised her mistake as she had a big jug of hot water.  She dusted it off dunked in back into the tea – it did have some added extras from the ash tray added flavour!!

Whist we were all enjoying our drinks Baron went off on reconnaissance to explore the three-storey fortress in the grounds and he came back quite animated saying he had shot imaginary bows and arrows at would be attackers.  He’s now planning to build a similar one in their back garden - subject to Mole Valley planning approval!

We headed back to the hotel and changed for dinner, enough time to visit the bar again before collection, we tried the cocktails this time as the gin and tonic the previous night seemed to be pure gin!!!
The Les Pieds dans la Plat restaurant in Conde Sur L’Escaut was fabulous just inside the Belgium border.  We had amuse bouche to start then the ladies had wonderful fish including swordfish, sea bass and prawns and the guys had steak.

On Sunday, Marc and Maite hosted a wonderful buffet in their garden, it was gloriously sunny the champagne and red wine was flowing and Maite had made a wonderful duck and apple pie which we all enjoyed.  Phillip gave an impressive speech in both English and his very best French and President Christophe from Conde Saint Amand thanked us so much for coming.  Peter Heard continued his party piece of smashing wine glasses, he was taken away from the glasses very quickly!!

We were then transported back to Lille for our train which went smoothly until we got to the security scanners! Philip was accused of carrying lethal weapons - we could see him being carted off by security for interrogation but guess what - it turned out to be the President’s chain of office that caused the problem after all! Phew.  We arrived back in London and all went off in different directions.

There was some hilarity on the train that Maureen, Baron, John and Lynne Smith, Peter and Ann Heard, Andrew and Philip were on, although they probably did not think so at the time!! The train from St Pancras to Sutton was uneventful but when they caught the train from Sutton to East Ewell, they were told to be on the first 8 carriages because of a short platform.  The train was busy and they were split up with John and Philip being at the other end of the carriage.  Halfway through the journey Peter and Andrew looked out of the carriage to see which carriage they were in.  John and Philip thought they were getting off and shot off the train with their luggage headed down the platform!  When they saw everyone was still on the train they had to jump back on with Philip’s case getting stuck! Phew! They made it and everyone got home safely.
What a great trip.

The French Club are looking forward to visiting the UK next year.
