Ewell Rotary's recent Bridge Afternoon Tea was a tremendous success, bringing together bridge enthusiasts, community supporters and plenty of delicious homemade treats, all in aid of My Time for Young Carers.
The event was inspired by Primrose Drake of Kingswood Bridge Club, a former member of Ewell Rotary who continues to support many of our fundraising activities. Thanks to her enthusiasm and connections within the local bridge community, players from both Kingswood Bridge Club and Epsom Bridge Club joined us for a memorable afternoon.
We were also delighted to welcome the Mayor of Epsom & Ewell, Councillor Lucie McIntyre, who attended with a family team and helped make the occasion even more special.
While competitive bridge was at the heart of the afternoon, the refreshments soon became a talking point. One guest arrived expecting a modest slice of cake and was amazed to discover a full traditional afternoon tea awaiting her. Guests enjoyed a wonderful spread of sandwiches, sausage rolls, freshly baked scones with jam and cream, and an astonishing 100 homemade cakes lovingly prepared by Honorary Ewell Rotarian Jenny Read. The cakes were simply fabulous and received rave reviews throughout the afternoon.
The fundraising spirit continued with a raffle featuring an impressive selection of prizes, generously supported by attendees. Special thanks go to Jackie Brewer, whose expert gift-wrapping made the prizes look as impressive as the donations themselves.
The bridge competition was expertly organised by Ann Madden, a friend of Primrose's from Kingswood Bridge Club. Alongside the card play, participants also enjoyed a light-hearted challenge involving a balloon marked with the number two making its way around the room, adding plenty of laughter to the afternoon.
Events like this rely on dedicated volunteers, and we are enormously grateful to Ewell Rotarians Lynne Harvey, Olive Harrison and Jean Donnelly, together with former Rotarian Mary Hudson, whose hard work behind the scenes helped ensure everything ran smoothly.
A huge thank you to everyone who attended, donated, volunteered and supported the event. Together, you helped create a wonderful afternoon of friendship, fun and fundraising, making a valuable contribution to the important work of My Time for Young Carers.
