Nancy and Emma gave the members an interesting talk about the Beacon Club and what it is doing to help people with cognitive impairment and dementia in SW Edinburgh.
Nancy gave a history of the Beacon Club. It is now 28 years old and provides day care for people with dementia in SW Edinburgh including Juniper Green, Currie and Balerno. It has had various sites including St Margaret’s in Juniper Green, Currie Community Centre, but since 2018 has been in a new centre in Broomhouse.
Emma described the club’s new venture “Space Age Connections” which aims to provide an outreach service to people with dementia in SW Edinburgh by volunteers who will be called connectors. Nancy described how this service not only benefitted the person with dementia but also what the connector gained from it.
Both Nancy and Emma thanked the Rotary Club for gifting tablets to the club and described the various uses that they had been put to.
The club’s vote of thanks for an interesting and informative talk was given by Ian Kerr.
