David Kay, a member of the Leith Rotary Club, was speaking in his capacity as a hotel proprietor and entertaining us with tales of his customer experiences.
David is the proprietor of A Haven Guest House on Ferry Road, which he acquired in 2014. From this period of just six years he was able to regale us with so many amusing, even amazing anecdotes that we were left wondering if he ever had normal guests, whatever that term means.
He started with his being asked more than once what time the one o’clock gun went off. He remembered the guests who proposed to visit Skye and be back for lunch – “it doesn’t look far on the map” – and the naked sleep-walker. There were the guests who used the kettle in the bedroom for making porridge or heating up their pot-noodles.
He spoke of guests forgetting things when they left. One couple came back looking for their daughter and another guest left false teeth which David had to send on, having to say at the post office what the parcel contained. There was also the guest who had not one but three false hands – one for driving, one for eating and one for general use.
And so it went on. David just ran out of time, leaving us with the thought that he had many more stories, including some too risqué for such polite company.
Ian Kerr thanked David on behalf of the Club.
