“What dedication of young people from Bromley who help to make the world a better place!”
These were the words of Cllr Jonathan Andrews, Bromley’s Mayor, after presenting awards to twenty-six young people from Bromley secondary schools who had made outstanding contributions to their communities.
Over 200 family and friends gathered at the Langley Park Centre for the Performing Arts on Friday, January 30th. They, along with local MPs Peter Fortune and Liam Conlon, representatives from London Biggin Hill Airport and Bromley Football Club and many Rotarians heard inspiring stories of how Bromley students, some as young as12 have contributed to charities, their own families and their local communities.
Oscar and Ryan ran the equivalent of nine and a half marathons last November to raise money for men’s mental health. Leanne is a young carer for her mum, who is also an active Scout and bell-ringer. Every Friday Kierun, who is 12, helps people with physical and mental disabilities learn to play cricket. Halle teaches dance and Florence teaches art. Jasmine is a volunteer life-guard at Beckenham Place Park Lake and works at the charity Sense shop. Ahash is a first-aider and NCO with the St John’s Ambulance.
Every one of the 26 award winners had an amazing story to tell.
Abdul Rehman, from St Olave’s Grammar School won a special prize, the Stuart Jack Cup. Abdul leads a team offering free on-line tutoring sessions and in-person workshops for deprived students. He also volunteers at Kings College Hospital and works with a wide variety of local faith groups. He has also designed communication and mobility devices for specific medical conditions.
At the start and in the interval the Langley Park Boys School Dance Band entertained the audience royally, and at the close everyone was invited for drinks and refreshments.
The award winners came from the following schools:
Babington House, Bishop Justus CofE School, Bromley High School, Bullers Wood School for Girls, Charles Darwin School, Orion Coopers School, Farringtons School, Hayes School, Newstead Wood School, Ravens Wood School for Boys, St Olave’s Grammar School.
The event was sponsored by London Biggin Hill Airport and preceded by a presentation of cheques to charities who had helped with Bromley Borough Rotary’s Sleigh Collection in the weeks before Christmas.
