Raised over £2,000 for Bertha James Day Centre

On Friday 28th April an audience of around 500 enjoyed a Proms themed concert at Langley Park Performing Arts Centre organised by the Bromley Rotary Club.

A varied programme of music ranged from Mozart’s Toy Symphony played by the Bromley Youth Music Trust’s String Ensemble, through Broadway hits, to a rousing chorus of Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Britannia accompanied by the Salvation Army’s Bromley Temple Band. There were also stunning individual performances by Chris Deacon (trumpet), Richard Phillips (piano) and Mark Norwood (baritone) who rattled through Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘Modern Major General’.

Heather Hall from the Bertha James Day Centre for the elderly spoke briefly about their work – and helped raise £1,350 from an audience collection.

In the second half The Bromley Youth Music Trust’s Chamber Choir was joined by The Bromley Temple Songsters to form a Prom’s Chorus of 60 voices under the leadership of Dorothy Nancekievill, Head of Farringtons School and leader of The Salvation Army's, prestigious International Staff Songsters.

The Temple Band’s Bandmaster, Geoff Nunn who retires this year was presented with a Rotary Service Recognition Award by Adrian Sargeant, president of the Bromley Rotary Cub.

The concert was the fourth organised and compared by Major Melvyn Ackroyd, immediate past president of Bromley Borough Rotary, and if the audience reaction is anything to go by the hope is for many more to come.
