Carluke Rotary Club High Mill Primary RotaKids 2013-14
The Rotary Club of Carluke were back to school this week with a new venture, RotaKids.
RotaKids is a project of Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland and is an exciting way for children aged between 7 and 12 years to get together, make friends and enjoy working on fun activities and projects.
The club discussed the RotaKids project and decided to have a pilot launch with one of the local primary schools.
President Archie Ralston approached High Mill Primary School Head Teacher Marion Girdwood with the proposal of High Mill being the first RotaKids club in South Lanarkshire . Ms Girdwood said she was delighted to have the school involved and the wheels were set in motion.
The Rotary Club will work with the school to help RotaKids get the most enjoyment from whatever they are working on. The Rotary Club hopes the school will benefit from motivated youngsters who are eager to use their skills to help others while having a good time in the process.
Rotakids really adds to the great work already going on in schools. They learn to make their own decisions and, with the help from the appointed teacher and Rotary, put their ideas into action. Rotakids also fits in with the citizenship element of the curriculum. Youngsters make a difference in their community and enjoy a boost to their confidence, as well as make friends along the way. They pick up new skills, understand how their actions can impact on others and really broaden their horizons

The RotaKids will hold regular meetings at the school assisted by Carluke Rotary Club and the new Rotakids have already decided that their first project will be to assist in the supply of Safe, Clean Drinking Water to the people of the Philippines.
After the official business President Archie Ralston and Sandy Morrison gave a presentation on how Rotary International are helping children and their parents in third world countries. Archie demonstrated the "Life Straw" to the school. Life Straw is a portable water purification tool that cleanses surface water and makes it safe for human consumption. It is just 25 cm long and 29 mm in diameter and can be hung around the neck. Life Straw requires no electrical power or spare parts. It filters up to 700 litres of water and effectively removes most of the micro organisms responsible for causing waterborne diseases. It kills disease causing micro organisms which spread diarrhoea, dysentery, typhoid, and Cholera.
Archie placed dirty grass and a hand full of soil and rubble into a container and mixed it together. He then placed the Life Straw in the muddy water and proceeded to suck the contents through the straw. The children were fascinated by the result of the Life Straw and how it could change lives.
Head Teacher Marion Girdwood thanked the Rotarians for their demonstration and interest in the school and looked forward to many years of continued success.
