The Battle of Britain Historical Society which, while looking after the gravestones that do not come under the upkeep of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, also place where it is appropriate memorial stones for those who sacrificed their life while serving this country.
One such was Sgt John Keating Haire who, while returning from a mission during World War Two with his plane being badly damaged. Upon realising that he was heading for the village of Arreton and could not land safely in any open field, was able to alter course so as not to land on any houses in the village. In doing so it cost him his life.
Sandown Rotary Club made a donation towards this memorial stone, which has been erected just to the north of Arreton village in memory of this gallant pilot.
