The statement made by Salvation Army Captain Rodney Bean that “the loss of three wage packets and you may be homeless”, stuck in the mind of last year’s Sandown Rotary Club President Vanessa Churchman when she gave thought to choosing her charity for the year.
Vanessa invited Captain Bean to be the guest speaker at a recent meeting of Sandown Rotary, where he outlined the work of the Salvation Army from its beginning and in particular the work that is currently being done on a weekly basis, and especially around the Christmas period, for Island residents.
In particular, they are grateful for the donations of food that are regularly given by local supermarkets and international chains. He said that he is humbled by the generosity of them & the general public at times, but without these donations they just would not be able to supply a hot meal to the needy that even in this day & age are on this Island.
Past President Vanessa Churchman thanked Captain Bean for his presentation and for the work done on the Island by the Salvation Army. She then presented him with a cheque for £1,000,00 to help with their Christmas fundraising appeal.
Thanking the assembled members, Captain Bean said “The Rotary’s donation will be extremely useful over the Christmas period here on the Island, enabling hot meals to be given to those in need , to help shelter homeless people over Christmas, and support less fortunate families by providing food and presents.”
A footnote from the Rotary Club of Sandown: “ The Salvation Army, and many others, really do a marvellous job, and it is hoped that people will continue to give generously over the festive period to support the work of all the organisations working selflessly to help others on the Island.”
