ZOOM MEETING. SPEAKER BILL DOUGLAS "SEEING HISTORY THROUGH POSTAGE STAMPS"

Mon, Aug 2nd 2021 at 7:15 pm - 10:00 pm

THE CROWN HAS SUFFERED FROM THE PINGDEMIC and cannot staff the Hotel as planned. Tim will host the Zoom meeting and we will have what promises to be a fascinating talk. Full details below.

  • Seeing History through Postage Stamps’:  It’s 180 years since the appearance of the famed Penny Black, the first universal postage stamp in the world. Since then, nearly two hundred years of change, development and progress have been captured and reflected in the countless thousands of small sticky squares of paper created by nearly every country in the world.  This richly illustrated and entertaining talk will appeal to all; no knowledge of stamps is necessary. Expert speaker Bill Douglas examines why the Penny Black came to be, its hidden features and value, then looks individually at dozens of postage stamps from all corners of the earth, highlighting social change, conflict, celebration, struggle and the best of design. Some stamps are humorous, others shock, not least the look at the rarest and most valuable stamps of all time with which the talk concludes. More than just a review of stamps, this presentation reminds us of the myriad of themes which have defined modern history.

  • Bill Douglas is an I.T. professional and a Modern Languages graduate. One of his favourite ways of relaxing after his day job in the NHS is to delve into his carefully curated stamp collection.  Many years of professional presenting have equipped him with a warm, knowledgeable style.  Bill is a Trustee of a local history society in Liverpool and is Chair of his local branch of the British Computer Society, so he appreciates the value and privilege of providing talks to similar special and general interest groups.
