The Gurkha museum in Winchester is a small but very compact museum with a lot of information conveyed in various styles, from artefacts to very loud life like and life size static displays of particular events. Starting with the background information on the culture and customs of the hill tribes in Nepal, which are collectively known to us as the Gurkhas. It traces the history of the Gurkhas from 1815, with units in the British East India Company, through the long history of recruitment into the British Army, in one form or another, through the 2 world wars and up to the modern Brigade of Gurkhas in the British Army. With 26 Victoria Crosses. A real gem of a museum for the 17 Rotary members, family and friends. A delight which just had to rounded off with a good curry in the nearby Gurkha’s Inn restaurant.
Our thanks to Penny and Eddie for organising the trip.
Philip Dinn.
