Dinner Meeting TALK BY BECKEY WITHEY, AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLAR.

Mon, Feb 24th 2014 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

Beckey was sponsored by Cosham Rotary Club as an Ambassadorial Scholar for 2012/2013. Becky is studying for a Masters in Development Studies and spent for a year at the University of Ghana in Accra.

Becky came to our meeting and gave an excellent presentation on her year in Ghana and the value of the Foundation's Ambassadorial Scholarship. She stated that she was delighted to been chosen for a Scholarship and had wanted to be involved in a Rotary project, having been a member of The University of Southampton's Rotaract Club while reading for her initial degree .
She described Ghana University and life in student accommodation there and among the pictures on her Powerpoint presentation it was noticeable that she was the only white person visible. Becky said that she had been determined to eat only local food but found that as time went on she did lapse into international fast food on occasions. The Rotary Club of Accra hosted her and gave her much assistance and encouragement.
Becky had as her thesis "Unsafe abortions in Tena, Ghana among 18 - 24 year olds" She found a remarkable lack of knowledge about the availability of legal abortions and a large reliance on illegal abortions, often with fatal results.
This was an interesting session by a lively and confident 24 year old scholar which helped to prove the value of Foundation grants. Members felt that she had demonstrated the ethos of Rotary International both by her personal development and the fact that her research would be used by other agencies to protect health and save lives.
