In the last few years Guernsey’s own Regiment, the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry has begun to come back into the consciousness of the island.
Developing on the Memorial laid in 2017 in Guernsey and France the Charity have introduced the Student Exchange, twinned St Peter Port with Masnieres, reintroduced the RGLI Regimental Dinner, reconnected Guernsey’s historic Regiment with the current Princess of Wales Royal Regiment and reconstituted the Regimental Colours reconnecting the links to the Crown & the Island and being present at each memorial service today.
Their current project is the restoration of the ruined building at Les Rue Vertes, Masnieres in which the RGLI sheltered for three days in 1917 and despite terrible losses stopped the largest German advance of the War.
Chris Oliver, no stranger to Rotary members, will return after last speaking to us three years ago and discuss the RGLI’s development of cultural diplomacy across countries, the forming of foreign charities, focusing local interest, and gifting culture and positive change to future generations. Including, how to hopefully raise £350K for 16 Rue Vertes.
